Fire Safety in the Home
July 19, 2019While we at Steven Brown & Associates have many products designed to be used for fire safety in a business or company setting, we feel that it’s also important to cover the importance of fire safety in the home as well. Here are a few important steps to take in order to keep your family and your home safe in the event of a fire.
Have at Least Two Escape Plans
Ensuring that every member of your household knows two ways to escape from every room of the home is a key component in fire safety. Establish a family meeting point outside the home where you can gather and make sure everyone is safe.
Install the Right Number of Smoke Alarms
According to the National Fire Protection Association, fire alarms should be installed on every floor of your home, in addition to outside each sleeping area. Testing your fire alarms once a month and changing the batteries at least once a year will keep your family safe (and avoid the irritating low-battery chirp!).
Keep Your Stovetop Clean
This seems like a given, but it’s amazing how something so simple can cause such a world of damage. Low-hanging curtains, paper towels, hand towels, and potholders can easily overlap the stovetop without you even noticing, which can quickly go ablaze if not handled correctly. Be sure to remove large food particles as well, particularly if you’re using a gas cooktop. Large pieces can get lodged down in the grates and catch fire if not properly removed.
Keep Extinguishers Handy
If a fire does start, you’ll need to be prepared no matter where you are in the house. Keep several extinguishers in your home, on every level, and be sure to properly train everyone in the house on proper technique for handling an extinguisher. Always remember to PASS (Point, Aim, Squeeze, and Spray)!
At Steven Brown & Associates, we’re committed to keeping everyone safe in the event of a fire. Whether you’re at home or at work, it’s important to stay informed and remember what to do should a fire arise.
